Iganyana Arts Centre

Iganyana is the Ndebele name for Painted Dog, an apt name for the center that houses the art being produced from the Painted Dog Conservation’s initiative to help the local community develop arts and crafts for the national and international markets.

The program provides both young and adult artisans with the materials and equipment, and training they need. Some of the art supplies and equipment were donated by sponsors in U.K., Holland, and the U.S., and local Zimbabwe businesses are now sending over their scraps. Today, the Centre’s artists produce unique and charming works using approximately 70% recycled materials. They have quickly developed a broad reputation for producing some of the most beautiful and high quality crafts in the country.

The program has several benefits: it financially benefits the artists whose work is purchased, giving them a way to make a living from conservation; it benefits students as their earnings go directly to cover their educational fees; it promotes conservation by teaching the sustainable use of natural resources; and it educates foreign tourists as well as the local residents about the precarious status of the Painted Dog in Africa.

Snare Wire Sculpture
To further educate the world about the destruction of wildlife by illegal poaching, particularly the insidious use of wire snares, Painted Dog Conservation has contracted local artists to create sculpture made from the snares, which are removed from the bush by our Anti-Poaching Units.
